The three ways the marketplace costs you
1. Commission you payWhat the apps take off the top of every order, across all three combined.
2. Repeat orders you never get (estimated)The reorders you miss out on because the higher app price drives customers away instead of bringing them back.
3. Upsell revenue you never earn (estimated)The apps own their checkout screens. You cannot add smart upsells on any of them. On your own site and app, you can, on every order.
Total cost of selling through the appsCommission, plus the repeat business and upsell revenue you miss out on.
Every month on the apps, you lose three ways.
Why this happens, in DoorDash's own words: to cover the 15 to 30% commission, most restaurants raise their delivery menu prices. DoorDash's own data says that markup leads to up to 37% fewer sales and up to 78% lower reorder rates. So you pay the commission, and the price increase you need to afford it drives customers away instead of turning them into repeat business, which is where the real profit is.
